To train medical students through a primary health care approach with special emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, early detection, diagnosis and management of diseases including rehabilitation and social integration of transport workers, their families and rural population.

The desire of the Transport Corporation Employees to have a Medical College and Hospital to provide specialized Medical treatment to people in the area and to the Transport Employees and their families was fulfilled by the State Government by issuing a GO Ms.No.1938, Health and Family Welfare Department, dated 16.7.1986 permitting to take over the Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium with an area of 327.66 acres by the Institute of Road Transport to start a Medical College at Perundurai, Periyar District, Erode with an annual intake of 100 students.
